Berlin-based producer safejas returns to WOE with ‘Habits’, a four-track EP which sees him following the dancefloor-agnostic thread of his previous work.

Having seen previous EP ‘Silk’ second track ‘Kan’ reworked by Caldera last year, safejas presents on ‘Habits’ his first collaborative works, this time with saxophonist Henry Weekes, also Berlin-based. Originally emerging from safejas’ appearance on Weekes’ improvisational music show ‘Communication is Key’ (Refuge Worldwide), the EP finds Weekes improvising sax lines amidst the dense web of safejas’ percussive architecture.

The EP’s titular track, opening the release, teases out safejas’ talent for skittery, nervous percussion, as an addictively-simple melody unwinds overhead. The kicks slam harder than ever on ‘Lemonade’, a lean, up-tempo, and curiously ravey track, taking its cue from the more experimental corners of club music. ‘Interlilac’, on which Weekes’ saxophone returns, might be the most straightforwardly beautiful track produced by safejas thus far. Starting gently yet insistently, it’s a track of processed synths and heady arpeggios, propelled by interlocking melodies and a foundation of hard drum work.

‘Wasp Song (A Dark Gentle Never)’ closes out the EP. Starting in a fog of flickering hi-hats and enveloping, spacious saxophone, the waspiness of the title soon emerges. Breaking through the darkness, ‘Wasp Song’ engulfs in a snarling intensity of screeching walls-of-sound and taut snares, before settling down into a rhythm of chromatic smudges that might have been tempted over from the PC music sonic universe.

safejas has shared bills with the likes of Squid, Gaika and Alexis, and has performed live sets at Boiler Room and CTM Berlin. His music has been supported by BBC Radio 6, DJ Mag, KEXP, Bandcamp, NTS, Rinse FM and more. He is a resident DJ on Threads radio.
